Introduction

Ravencoin (RVN) is an open-source Layer 1 blockchain built specifically for the creation, issuance, and peer-to-peer transfer of digital assets. Based on a fork of the Bitcoin codebase, Ravencoin uses Proof of Work and the KAWPOW mining algorithm while adding native asset functionality to the underlying blockchain.

RVN is the native cryptocurrency of the Ravencoin network and is used for transaction fees, asset issuance, and network operations. Ravencoin assets can represent digital or physical property, securities, collectibles, memberships, tickets, gift cards, and other user-defined assets.

Project Background

Ravencoin was designed as a purpose-specific blockchain for transferring assets between parties. The protocol extends Bitcoin's UTXO-based architecture with native asset issuance, asset transfer, unique assets, messaging, and other functionality intended to support asset ownership and transfer.

The network uses Proof of Work and the KAWPOW mining algorithm. KAWPOW was introduced to replace the earlier X16R and X16RV2 algorithms and is designed around GPU mining rather than specialized ASIC hardware.

Ravencoin assets are created directly on the blockchain and have unique names. Asset creators can define the quantity and transfer characteristics of an asset, while additional asset types can be used for unique or individually identifiable items.

The network supports main assets, sub-assets, unique assets, and restricted assets. Main assets can be subdivided into sub-assets, while unique assets provide individual identifiers for specific items. Restricted assets can include transfer restrictions and address-based controls.

Assets can also carry metadata and IPFS references, allowing issuers to associate additional information or external content with an on-chain asset. Asset ownership is represented through Ravencoin transactions and can be transferred between network addresses.

Ravencoin also supports asset-based rewards, allowing RVN or other assets to be distributed to holders of a particular asset. Messaging functionality can be used alongside assets for communication and information distribution.

History

Ravencoin was announced on October 31, 2017, and mining began with the public release of the network on January 3, 2018. The project launched without an ICO, premine, or developer allocation and was released as an open-source Bitcoin-derived blockchain.

The original Ravencoin protocol modified Bitcoin's monetary and block-production parameters. It introduced a 5,000 RVN initial block reward, a one-minute target block time, a 21 billion RVN maximum supply, and the X16R mining algorithm.

Ravencoin's asset functionality was developed as a core part of the protocol rather than as a separate smart contract system. This allowed users to issue and transfer assets directly through native blockchain transactions.

The network subsequently moved from X16R to X16RV2 and then to KAWPOW. KAWPOW activated in May 2020 as the network's current mining algorithm and was designed to provide a GPU-oriented alternative following the development of specialized mining hardware for the earlier algorithms.

Ravencoin's first block reward halving occurred at block 2,100,000 on January 11, 2022, reducing the reward from 5,000 RVN to 2,500 RVN. Subsequent halvings occur every 2,100,000 blocks rather than according to a fixed calendar date.

Development has continued through the open-source Ravencoin Core repository, with ongoing work covering consensus, asset functionality, node infrastructure, wallet software, mining, networking, and protocol improvements. The latest official Core release is v4.8.0, released in August 2026. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Tokenomics and Emissions

RVN has a maximum supply of 21,000,000,000 coins. Ravencoin launched with an initial block reward of 5,000 RVN and a target block interval of one minute. The network was launched without a premine or developer allocation.

The block reward is reduced by 50% every 2,100,000 blocks. The first halving reduced the reward from 5,000 RVN to 2,500 RVN in January 2022. The next scheduled halving reduces the reward to 1,250 RVN after another 2,100,000 blocks.

Mining is performed using KAWPOW Proof of Work. Miners compete to produce valid blocks and receive newly issued RVN together with applicable transaction fees.

RVN also has a specific role in asset creation. Issuing a main asset requires burning RVN, with the required amount determined by the asset type and issuance operation. This mechanism connects the native cryptocurrency directly to the creation of assets on the network.

Asset creators can issue a defined quantity of tokens and, where supported by the asset type, create sub-assets, unique assets, or restricted assets. Additional RVN can be required for certain asset operations, while transaction fees are paid in RVN.

Ravencoin therefore uses RVN both as the native monetary asset and as the utility currency underlying the network's asset issuance system. The 21 billion maximum supply is defined by the protocol's emission schedule.

Roadmap

Ravencoin development is community-driven and continues through its open-source repositories, improvement proposals, core releases, and ecosystem projects.

Protocol development includes continued maintenance of Ravencoin Core, consensus improvements, asset functionality, wallet infrastructure, networking, mining, and node software. The project does not operate under a centralized development company or traditional corporate roadmap.

Asset functionality remains a major area of development, including improvements to asset issuance and management, restricted assets, messaging, rewards, and tools for creating and transferring tokenized representations of real-world and digital property.

Recent development proposals include work toward post-quantum signatures using ML-DSA-44, as well as continued improvements to asset handling, node infrastructure, mining, and developer tooling.

The Ravencoin ecosystem also includes independent wallets, explorers, marketplaces, asset-management applications, payment tools, and other community-built projects. These projects extend the functionality of the underlying blockchain without requiring changes to the core protocol.
