Introduction
Qubitcoin (QTC) is a Layer 1 blockchain developed by Superquantum that combines cryptocurrency mining with quantum circuit simulation. Its Quantum Proof of Work (qPoW) consensus uses GPU-based quantum simulation as the computational work performed by miners, creating a network designed to contribute computing resources to quantum research while securing the blockchain.
QTC is the native cryptocurrency of Qubitcoin and is used for block rewards, transaction fees, and payments within the network. Qubitcoin is based on the Bitcoin codebase and retains a UTXO transaction model, while replacing conventional Hashcash mining with a quantum computation challenge.
Project Background
Qubitcoin was created to explore whether blockchain mining could perform useful scientific computation instead of relying exclusively on computationally purposeless hash calculations. Its qPoW system embeds quantum circuit simulation into the mining process, allowing participating GPUs to contribute computational capacity toward quantum algorithms while competing for QTC block rewards.
The current qPoW implementation uses NVIDIA's cuStateVec library from the cuQuantum SDK to simulate quantum circuits on GPUs. The mining process uses 128-bit complex floating-point calculations and converts final expectation values into fixed-point representations to maintain deterministic results across supported computational environments.
Quantum circuits used by qPoW contain parametrized single-qubit rotation gates. Portions of the block hash are used to parameterize the circuit, while the resulting quantum-state expectation values are incorporated into the final cryptographic hash. This links the mining computation to the underlying blockchain data and makes individual mining attempts dependent on the block being mined.
The initial implementation simulates a 16-qubit quantum system. The project states that verification of the quantum computation can be performed significantly faster than the original mining calculation, allowing network participants to verify completed work without repeating the full computational workload.
Qubitcoin retains Bitcoin-style UTXO transactions, SHA-256 hashing, SegWit support, Bech32 addresses, and peer-to-peer blockchain infrastructure. The project maintains its own node, mining software, wallet tools, and block explorer.
The network is intended to create an economic incentive for developing increasingly efficient quantum simulators. As miners optimize GPU implementations and quantum simulation techniques, the resulting improvements can also benefit broader quantum computing research and applications.
History
Qubitcoin originated from research into Quantum Proof of Work and the possibility of using cryptocurrency mining incentives to accelerate quantum simulation technology. An early qPoW prototype was published in 2022 by researchers associated with the project.
The Qubitcoin network launched in October 2024. The project describes its launch as a fair launch, with development centered around an open-source implementation that allows miners and developers to participate in the network without requiring specialized proprietary mining infrastructure.
Qubitcoin was initially built as a fork of the Bitcoin Core codebase. The project retained Bitcoin's established blockchain architecture while modifying the mining system to incorporate quantum circuit computation and adapting network parameters for the additional computational requirements.
During its early development, the project focused on implementing GPU-based qPoW using NVIDIA cuQuantum technologies. The development roadmap also included an optimized quantum simulator, additional mining hardware research, wallet improvements, and a dedicated block explorer.
The Qubitcoin network is operational and continues to produce blocks. The public explorer has recorded more than 104,000 blocks, with transactions using standard Bitcoin-derived UTXO and SegWit infrastructure.
Superquantum continues to develop Qubitcoin alongside its broader quantum computing research. The organization describes Qubitcoin as one component of its work toward making quantum computing and simulation more accessible through specialized software and distributed infrastructure.
Tokenomics and Emissions
QTC is the native cryptocurrency of the Qubitcoin blockchain. The network has a maximum supply of 21,000,000 QTC, following a Bitcoin-inspired monetary model.
The current block reward is 50 QTC. Public blockchain data shows blocks being produced at an average interval of approximately 11 minutes, although individual block intervals vary according to network mining activity and difficulty.
Qubitcoin uses mining rewards as the primary mechanism for distributing newly issued QTC. Miners perform the qPoW computation and compete to produce valid blocks, receiving the applicable block subsidy together with transaction fees.
The project has described plans for a modified block reward structure and an ASERT difficulty adjustment mechanism as part of adapting Bitcoin's monetary and consensus parameters to quantum simulation workloads. The live network should be distinguished from earlier development proposals when evaluating its current emission schedule.
QTC is divisible into smaller units and can be transferred using the network's Bitcoin-derived UTXO transaction system. The blockchain supports SegWit and native Bech32 addresses, while the project's wallet infrastructure provides tools for creating, signing, and broadcasting transactions.
Roadmap
Qubitcoin's development roadmap focuses on improving Quantum Proof of Work, expanding quantum simulation infrastructure, and increasing the accessibility and performance of the network's mining and wallet ecosystem.
The project has planned continued development of an optimized quantum simulator specifically designed for qPoW workloads. A dedicated simulator can serve as a reference implementation while providing benchmarks for comparing mining performance across different hardware and software configurations.
Hardware development is another area of interest, including research into specialized hardware capable of accelerating the quantum simulation workloads used by qPoW. The project has also explored potential collaboration with quantum computing companies and hardware manufacturers.
Wallet and infrastructure development includes improvements to user-facing wallet software, the public block explorer, mining tools, and network infrastructure. The project also maintains educational and community resources intended to help developers and miners understand quantum simulation and qPoW.
Longer-term development is centered on expanding the range and complexity of quantum circuits that can be used for mining while improving the efficiency of their simulation. The broader objective is to create a distributed computational network that can contribute to quantum algorithm development while maintaining blockchain security.
