Introduction
BitcoinZ is a decentralized, community-driven cryptocurrency designed for peer-to-peer digital payments, financial privacy, and decentralized network participation. The project combines concepts associated with Bitcoin with privacy technology derived from the Zcash ecosystem.
BitcoinZ launched on September 9, 2017 through a fair-launch model without an Initial Coin Offering, premine, founder reward, or developer tax. The network uses Proof of Work consensus with the Equihash algorithm and supports both transparent and shielded transactions.
BTCZ Token
BTCZ is the native digital asset of the BitcoinZ blockchain. It is used for peer-to-peer payments, transfers of value, and mining rewards for participants who contribute computational work to secure the network.
BitcoinZ has a maximum supply of 21 billion BTCZ. The initial block reward was 12,500 BTCZ, with the protocol reducing the block reward by half every 840,000 blocks. With a target block time of approximately 2.5 minutes, the halving cycle is designed to occur approximately every four years.
Maximum Supply: 21,000,000,000 BTCZ
Initial Block Reward: 12,500 BTCZ
Block Time: Approximately 2.5 minutes
Token Type: Native Digital Asset
Network: BitcoinZ
Consensus: Proof of Work
Mining Algorithm: Equihash
Token Distribution
BitcoinZ launched through a fair-launch model without an Initial Coin Offering, premine, founder reward, or developer tax. BTCZ was initially distributed through Proof of Work mining rather than through a private allocation to founders or investors.
The initial block reward was 12,500 BTCZ and the protocol uses an 840,000-block halving interval. The block reward is reduced by 50% at each halving according to the programmed emission schedule.
The current BitcoinZ network also includes VaultZ, a community funding mechanism that allocates 5% of block rewards to a community-governed fund. VaultZ is separate from the project's original 2017 fair-launch model and provides funding for community initiatives, development, infrastructure, and other ecosystem activities.
Initial Block Reward: 12,500 BTCZ
Halving Interval: 840,000 blocks
Maximum Supply: 21,000,000,000 BTCZ
ICO: None
Premine: None
Current VaultZ Allocation: 5% of Block Rewards
Technology
BitcoinZ is based on a Zcash-derived technical foundation while incorporating design principles associated with Bitcoin. The network uses Equihash Proof of Work and supports both transparent and shielded transaction types.
BitcoinZ supports transparent addresses for transactions whose activity can be publicly viewed on the blockchain, as well as shielded addresses that use zero-knowledge proof technology to provide enhanced transaction privacy. Shielded transactions use zk-SNARK technology, allowing transaction information to be protected while maintaining cryptographic verification of the transaction.
The BitcoinZ software includes full-node functionality, command-line tools, wallet functionality, peer-to-peer networking, and RPC interfaces. The project also supports lightweight wallet infrastructure designed to allow users to interact with the network without operating a complete blockchain node.
BitcoinZ continues to develop its core software through open-source repositories. Version 2.2.0, released in February 2026, introduced the Canopy network upgrade and included updates required for nodes, mining pools, wallets, and exchanges participating in the network.
Privacy
BitcoinZ provides optional transaction privacy through shielded addresses and zero-knowledge proof technology. Users can choose between transparent and shielded transaction functionality depending on the type of transaction and wallet support being used.
Shielded transactions are designed to protect transaction information using zk-SNARK-based cryptography while allowing the network to verify that transactions follow the protocol's validity rules. BitcoinZ therefore provides privacy functionality without requiring every transaction on the network to be shielded.
Mining & Network Security
BitcoinZ is secured through Proof of Work mining using the Equihash algorithm. Miners perform computational work to produce valid blocks, and successful miners receive BTCZ according to the network's block reward schedule.
The BitcoinZ protocol targets approximately 2.5-minute block intervals and uses its programmed emission and difficulty mechanisms to maintain network operation as mining participation changes. Equihash is a memory-intensive Proof of Work algorithm that was selected as part of BitcoinZ's original mining design.
BitcoinZ has also undergone a 2026 technical security review focused on supply integrity and vulnerabilities affecting its shielded transaction systems. The published review examined the project's software and reported no identified inflation, counterfeiting, double-spend, or network-reachable memory-safety issue within its stated scope. The review was a static engineering analysis and was not presented as a formal cryptographic audit or comprehensive security audit of every component.
Team & Organization
BitcoinZ was launched in September 2017 as a community-driven cryptocurrency project. The project does not operate through a traditional centralized corporate structure and does not rely on a central company or CEO to control the blockchain.
Development and ecosystem activities are supported by community participants, developers, miners, infrastructure operators, wallet developers, and other contributors. The project's open-source repositories allow developers to participate in the ongoing development of the BitcoinZ software.
Governance
BitcoinZ uses a community-driven governance model for coordinating development, funding, and ecosystem initiatives. The project does not use a separate governance token or centralized corporate authority to control the BitcoinZ blockchain.
BitcoinZ's documented governance framework allows community members to propose major core functionality and other ecosystem initiatives. Proposals concerning major core functionality can be approved through a community vote requiring a 55% majority, while certain other initiatives, including marketing, infrastructure, exchange listings, and community events, use a 70% majority threshold.
Community governance operates separately from BitcoinZ's Proof of Work consensus mechanism. Network participants running compatible software determine the blockchain's consensus rules, while community governance provides a framework for coordinating development, funding, infrastructure, and other ecosystem activities.
