Introduction
Neptune Privacy (XNT) is a decentralized Layer 1 blockchain focused on private digital cash, quantum-resistant cryptography, and zero-knowledge proof systems. The network uses Proof of Work consensus with the TIP5 hashing algorithm and a five-minute Layer 1 block target.
XNT is the native currency of Neptune Privacy and is used for private peer-to-peer transactions, network fees, mining rewards, and the broader Neptune ecosystem. XNT has no fixed maximum supply, with block rewards beginning at 6.8 XNT and gradually decreasing through a 72-month emission schedule before transitioning to a permanent 1 XNT tail emission.
Project Background
Neptune Privacy is a Proof of Work Layer 1 blockchain designed around private transactions and cryptographic verification. The network uses Mutator Sets as its core privacy data structure, replacing a traditional publicly observable UTXO set with cryptographically authenticated state that obscures transaction relationships.
Neptune uses zk-STARK proofs to verify transaction validity without requiring the underlying private transaction information to be exposed. The project also developed Triton VM, a Turing-complete virtual machine designed for recursive STARK proof verification and used as part of the Neptune protocol's proof system.
The Neptune blockchain uses the TIP5 hash function as part of its Proof of Work system. The project also maintains a CUDA-based GPU miner for XNT, providing mining infrastructure that communicates with XNT Core through JSON-RPC.
Mutator Sets provide the underlying mechanism for private state transitions. Additions are represented through cryptographic commitments, while removals use zero-knowledge proofs and authenticated data structures. This allows the network to verify spending conditions without publishing the transaction graph in the same form used by transparent blockchains.
Neptune is also being developed as part of a two-layer architecture. The Neptune Layer 1 provides the private base layer for XNT, while the Leviathan execution layer is being developed as a programmable environment using Miden-based technology. The two layers are designed to communicate through a cryptographic bridge, with WXNT representing the bridged form of XNT on the programmable layer.
The project provides open-source software for nodes, wallets, mining, explorers, proof generation, and developer integration. The primary XNT implementation is written in Rust, while GPU mining and proof-generation components include C++ and CUDA implementations.
History
Neptune's initial blockchain implementation was released in December 2024. The project initially operated under the Neptune branding before transitioning its primary native asset and software branding to XNT during subsequent protocol development.
The January 2026 XNT protocol upgrade introduced a new consensus rule set at block 15,256 and completed the project's XNT rebranding. The upgrade also added UTXO indexing, payment IDs, subaddresses, Node.js SDK functionality, C foreign-function interfaces, exchange integration APIs, and additional wallet and RPC functionality.
Further protocol upgrades followed during 2026. UpgradeVM activated at block 55,800, followed by UpgradeVMv4 at block 56,700, UpgradeVMv5 at block 57,650, and UpgradeVMv7 at block 59,200. These upgrades changed the Triton VM proof environment and updated the proof programs used by consensus.
The project introduced Mutator Sets as the cryptographic data structure underlying its privacy model. The system uses an append-only commitment structure together with a sliding-window Bloom filter and zero-knowledge proofs to authenticate additions and removals while obscuring the relationship between them.
Triton VM was released as open-source infrastructure for recursive zk-STARK verification. Neptune uses Triton VM to generate proofs that allow a block to validate the current state together with the accumulated chain history without requiring every node to replay the complete historical computation.
In July 2026, Neptune announced Leviathan as its Layer 2 architecture. Leviathan combines the private Neptune base layer with a programmable execution layer built on Miden and is being introduced through a closed beta known as the Leviathan Pioneers.
The current Neptune ecosystem includes XNT Core, the XNT GPU Miner, Triton VM, a STARK prover, the XNT Explorer, the NeptuneScan Explorer, and wallet and SDK infrastructure maintained through the project's public repositories.
Tokenomics and Emissions
XNT does not have a fixed maximum supply. The network began with a genesis supply of 1,942,384 XNT, consisting of 1,526,640 XNT allocated through a 1:1 migration for eligible NPT holders and 415,744 XNT allocated as a community-governed premine.
All NPT received through the migration was permanently burned. The project states that future XNT issuance is provided through Proof of Work mining rather than additional undisclosed allocations.
The XNT emission model begins with a 6.8 XNT block reward and decreases gradually through 72 monthly generations. The schedule is divided into three phases: Bootstrapping for months 1 through 12, Expansion for months 13 through 48, and Supply Convergence for months 49 through 72.
Following the 72-month emission period, the network transitions to a permanent tail emission of 1 XNT per block. Because the tail emission continues indefinitely, total supply is technically uncapped, although the effective inflation rate decreases as the circulating supply grows.
Neptune targets approximately five-minute Layer 1 blocks. New XNT enters circulation through Proof of Work mining, with the block reward distributed according to the network's consensus rules.
XNT is the native asset of the Neptune Privacy Layer 1 blockchain and is not issued through an external token contract. The project also uses WXNT as the bridged representation of XNT on the Leviathan programmable layer.
Roadmap
Neptune Privacy's current development is focused on expanding the private Layer 1, improving proof infrastructure, developing programmable applications through Leviathan, and building the tooling required for a broader private ecosystem.
The Leviathan Layer 2 is a major current development area. It combines Neptune's private base layer with a programmable execution environment based on Miden, allowing applications to execute privately while producing cryptographic proofs that can be verified by the network.
The Leviathan Pioneers closed beta is being used to introduce the programmable layer and test its architecture with developers and early participants. The planned stack includes private smart contracts, decentralized applications, and a bridge connecting XNT on the base layer with WXNT on the programmable layer.
Cross-chain interoperability is also part of the published XNT roadmap. The project plans to develop a canonical bridge and additional infrastructure for moving value between Neptune and external ecosystems while maintaining the privacy properties of the protocol.
Developer tooling is another active roadmap area, including SDKs, templates, integrated development tools, and infrastructure for applications built around private transactions and programmable execution.
Core protocol development continues through the XNT Core repository and associated Triton VM and proof-generation projects. Recent releases have included multiple consensus upgrades tied to new Triton VM versions, demonstrating continued protocol-level development during 2026.
