Introduction
Neptune Cash (NPT) is a privacy-focused Layer 1 blockchain designed as anonymous peer-to-peer digital cash with post-quantum security, zero-knowledge proofs, and programmable smart contracts. The network uses a UTXO architecture with Mutator Sets to provide private transactions while supporting scalable proof-based verification.
NPT is the native cryptocurrency of Neptune Cash. The network uses Proof of Work with a target block time of approximately 9.8 minutes and a maximum supply of 42 million NPT. Neptune was built from scratch and uses STARK proofs and Triton-VM as core components of its transaction and consensus architecture.
Project Background
Neptune Cash is designed to provide private digital cash without relying on elliptic-curve cryptography. Transaction amounts, senders, and recipients are hidden through its UTXO model and zero-knowledge proof system, while hash-based cryptography is used to provide post-quantum security.
The network's privacy architecture is built around Mutator Sets, a cryptographic authenticated data structure designed to allow private UTXOs to remain verifiable as they are spent and transferred. Transactions can be proven without revealing the underlying amounts or the full transaction history to observers.
Neptune uses STARK proofs generated through Triton-VM to prove transaction validity and other protocol computations. The system supports lock scripts and type scripts, allowing transaction outputs to enforce programmable spending and state-transition conditions.
The blockchain uses Proof of Work with two distinct mining roles. Composers construct block proposals and generate the required proofs, while guessers perform the Proof of Work search. The block reward can be divided between these roles by the composer, creating a market for specialized mining activities.
Neptune also uses a memory-hard Proof of Work design. The current mining architecture separates preprocessing from the online guessing phase, with the preprocessing stage designed around approximately 40 GB of memory. This replaced the original Proof of Work mechanism during a later network upgrade.
The project is designed to eventually support succinct blockchain verification. Recursive block validation is intended to allow a new node to verify the chain from a recent block proof rather than downloading and replaying the entire historical blockchain.
History
Neptune Cash was founded by cryptographer Alan Szepieniec and software engineer Thorkil Værge. The original Neptune whitepaper was published in 2021, outlining a Layer 1 architecture combining privacy, smart contracts, scalability, Proof of Work, STARK proofs, and post-quantum cryptography.
The first Neptune mainnet launched in February 2025. Hard Fork 1 followed in March 2025 and increased the maximum block size from 2 MB to 8 MB to provide additional transaction capacity.
In July 2025, the development team disclosed an inflation vulnerability that could potentially create undetectable additional supply. The network was subsequently reset from a new genesis block. The relaunch took place on August 5, 2025, with a cryptographic redemption process allowing holders of legacy-chain UTXOs to claim corresponding funds on the new chain.
The relaunch also introduced a substantially revised Proof of Work design, transaction compression improvements, new coinbase and reward handling, and additional consensus hardening. The new network retained the intended issuance schedule while accounting for the period before the reset.
In January 2026, a vulnerability was identified in Triton-VM. Neptune paused the network and released neptune-core v0.6.0 in February 2026 with the corresponding fixes. Approximately 2,000 blocks were rolled back as part of the recovery.
Additional protocol upgrades followed during 2026. Hard Fork Beta activated at block 38,000 in May and removed the memory-hard component of the mining algorithm while introducing a lustration barrier. Hard Fork Gamma followed in June after additional soundness issues were identified and fixed in Triton-VM and tasm-lib. The project continued releasing new client versions, including lightweight wallet support and additional address formats.
In September 2026, Neptune activated another hard fork that introduced transaction chaining, allowing transactions to spend UTXOs created by transactions that have not yet been confirmed. The project continues development toward succinctness, smart-contract infrastructure, and broader application support.
Tokenomics and Emissions
NPT has a maximum supply of 42,000,000 coins. The network includes a premine of 831,488 NPT, representing approximately 1.98% of the maximum supply. The remaining supply is distributed through Proof of Work mining.
The initial block reward is 128 NPT, with a target block time of approximately 9.8 minutes. The reward halves every 160,815 blocks, corresponding to approximately three years at the target block interval.
Neptune Cash has no tail emission. The block reward continues decreasing through scheduled halvings until the maximum supply of 42 million NPT is reached.
The premine was established to fund the project's development and initial operations. Project documentation states that the allocation was distributed among investors, founders and early employees, advisors, bounty participants, and an external development pool, with applicable portions subject to vesting and other restrictions.
There is no ongoing developer tax or block reward tax. After the applicable premine allocation, newly issued NPT enters circulation through the Proof of Work mining process and rewards the participants responsible for producing and securing the network.
The network's mining system divides block rewards between composers and guessers. Composers generate block proposals and proofs, while guessers contribute Proof of Work. The composer determines the proportion of the reward allocated between the two roles.
Roadmap
Neptune Cash's roadmap focuses on completing its proof-based infrastructure while expanding smart-contract functionality, transaction throughput, wallet support, and lightweight verification.
Succinctness is a major long-term protocol milestone. The planned recursive block validation system will allow each block to contain a proof establishing the correctness of its predecessor, allowing nodes to verify the chain without downloading and replaying its complete history.
Smart-contract development includes transaction chaining, lock-free UTXOs, programmable UTXO standards, multisignature functionality, crowdfunding contracts, non-native tokens, and additional decentralized financial applications.
The project is also developing improvements to the mempool, UTXO scanning, synchronization, large-wallet performance, proof generation, and wallet interoperability. Lightweight node infrastructure and mobile wallets are expected to become more practical as succinctness is implemented.
Future ecosystem development includes bridges and cross-chain atomic swaps, Layer 2 payment infrastructure, token standards, trading and financial applications, and a potential native decentralized exchange.
Further protocol research includes Triton-VM optimization, additional zero-knowledge functionality, improved proof generation, post-quantum cryptography, and continued development of Neptune's STARK-based proving infrastructure.
