Introduction

Nockchain (NOCK) is a Proof of Work Layer 1 blockchain built around Zero-Knowledge Proof of Work (ZK-PoW), where miners generate zero-knowledge proofs of NockVM computations as part of the consensus process. The network is designed to combine Bitcoin-style monetary properties with programmable, verifiable computation.

NOCK is the native cryptocurrency of Nockchain. The network launched on May 21, 2025, with no premine or founder allocation and a hard cap of 4,294,967,296 NOCK. Nockchain uses a note-based UTXO transaction model and supports NockApps, which allow applications to execute offchain and settle verifiable results against the shared base layer.

Project Background

Nockchain is designed around Zero-Knowledge Proof of Work, replacing conventional hash-based mining with the generation of cryptographic proofs. Miners produce STARK proofs over the NockVM, while network nodes verify those proofs and maintain the blockchain's UTXO ledger.

The network's architecture separates computation from base-layer settlement. NockApps are sovereign applications that can execute computation offchain and settle verifiable results against Nockchain. This approach is intended to allow complex application logic without requiring every node to reproduce the full computation.

Nockchain uses a note-based UTXO transaction model with flexible lock scripts. Transaction Engine v1 introduced Segregated Witness, shorter addresses, onchain data storage, and programmable lock scripts, expanding the functionality available at the base layer.

The NockVM provides the computational foundation for Nockchain's proof system. Nock is a compact instruction set designed to serve as a target for efficiently verifiable computation, while NockApps provide the application framework for building sovereign applications that interact with the blockchain.

The network is also developing Proof of Useful Work infrastructure. Its AI Compute Network allows inference providers to participate in an AI proof-of-work puzzle, with the longer-term objective of connecting economically useful computation with the security incentives of the blockchain.

History

Nockchain development grew from research into verifiable computation, NockVM, and Proof of Necessary Work. The project introduced the NockApp framework in 2024, followed by development of the Nockchain consensus system and its Zero-Knowledge Proof of Work architecture.

The project released its open-source client in May 2025 under the MIT license and launched the Nockchain mainnet on May 21, 2025. The genesis block included a reference to Bitcoin block 897,767, providing a publicly verifiable timestamp for the chain's launch.

Early Nockchain development focused on establishing the ZK-PoW consensus system and creating an open mining ecosystem. The network subsequently introduced a transaction engine with Segregated Witness, lock-script programmability, onchain data storage, and the first NockApp applications.

The NockApp SDK v1 was released in November 2025, followed by a bridge connecting Nockchain with Base in December 2025. The ecosystem also developed wallets, block explorers, mining pools, developer tooling, and infrastructure projects around the network.

In 2026, Nockchain transitioned to its Phase 2 architecture. The network activated ASERT difficulty adjustment and reduced the target block interval from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes. Demand Paging and networking upgrades were also introduced to reduce node resource requirements and improve synchronization performance.

In August 2026, Nockchain launched its AI Compute Network, adding a Proof of Work system centered on AI inference workloads. The project is continuing development toward a broader market for useful and verifiable computation.

Tokenomics and Emissions

NOCK has a hard maximum supply of 4,294,967,296 units, equal to 232. The token was fair-launched in May 2025 without a premine or founder allocation, with new NOCK issued through the network's Proof of Work system.

Under the current Phase 2 emission model, each block has a neutral budget of 2,048 NOCK. The model allocates 80%, or 1,638 NOCK per block, as a base mining reward and 20%, or 410 NOCK per block, to the Nockchain Foundation through a multisignature-controlled protocol fund.

The protocol fund is intended to support activities associated with ecosystem development, including proving demand, developer grants, product growth, research, liquidity, partnerships, and ecosystem coordination. The current allocation is described as temporary and is intended to change when the next useful Proof of Work puzzle based on the upgraded Nock ZKVM is activated.

Nockchain's original issuance schedule used progressively longer epochs and periodic halvings. The Phase 2 upgrade replaced that schedule with a height-dispatched issuance model while maintaining the same 232 hard cap.

NOCK is used as the native monetary asset of the Nockchain ecosystem, including blockchain transactions, fees, block rewards, and the economic incentives surrounding verifiable computation and NockApps.

Roadmap

Nockchain's roadmap focuses on completing its verifiable computation infrastructure while expanding programmability, useful computation, privacy, and application support.

The current roadmap includes a Useful Inference Routing Protocol designed to direct compute demand into the AI Compute Network. This follows the August 2026 launch of the AI Compute Network and is intended to connect inference demand with participating compute providers.

Further development includes completion of the general-purpose Nock ZKVM, which is intended to support efficient zero-knowledge proofs for arbitrary computation. A native ZK verification opcode is planned to allow fully verifiable applications to execute directly through the blockchain's scripting environment.

The roadmap also includes forced data availability at Layer 1, a privacy pool application, a native token standard, private DeFi infrastructure, and post-quantum secure signatures. These features are planned across 2027 development phases.

Longer-term development includes general-purpose ZK Compute Markets, extending the network beyond AI inference toward other economically useful computations that can produce efficient and verifiable proofs.
