Introduction

Litecoin (LTC) is a decentralized, open-source Layer 1 blockchain and peer-to-peer digital currency designed for fast, low-cost payments. The network uses Proof of Work with the Scrypt mining algorithm and operates without a central authority.

LTC is the native cryptocurrency of the Litecoin network. Litecoin uses a fixed maximum supply of 84 million LTC, approximately 2.5-minute block times, and a scheduled block reward halving every 840,000 blocks. The network also supports MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB), providing an optional privacy-focused transaction layer.

Project Background

Litecoin is a peer-to-peer blockchain designed to enable digital payments without relying on a central authority. Transactions and issuance are managed collectively by the network through open-source software and decentralized Proof of Work consensus.

Litecoin uses the Scrypt Proof of Work algorithm. Scrypt was selected as an alternative to Bitcoin's SHA-256 algorithm and was originally designed to make mining more accessible using consumer hardware. Litecoin mining is now supported by specialized Scrypt ASIC hardware, with miners contributing computational work to secure the network and process transactions.

The network targets a block every 2.5 minutes, approximately four times faster than Bitcoin's ten-minute target. This shorter block interval allows transactions to receive confirmations more frequently while maintaining Litecoin's Proof of Work security model.

Litecoin also supports Segregated Witness and the MimbleWimble Extension Block protocol. MWEB provides an optional privacy layer that allows users to transact using confidential amounts while retaining interoperability with Litecoin's main transaction chain.

Litecoin Core is the primary reference implementation and full-node software for the network. The software is open source and released under the MIT license, allowing developers to inspect, modify, and contribute to the codebase.

History

Litecoin was created by Charlie Lee and launched in October 2011 as a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency based on Bitcoin's open-source codebase. The project was designed to provide a faster block interval and a different mining algorithm while maintaining a decentralized Proof of Work architecture.

The network launched with a maximum supply of 84 million LTC and a four-times-faster target block interval than Bitcoin. Litecoin's Scrypt mining algorithm provided a distinct Proof of Work mechanism and became one of the defining characteristics of the network.

Over subsequent years, Litecoin introduced protocol improvements including Segregated Witness and support for the Lightning Network. These developments expanded Litecoin's transaction capabilities and helped establish the network as infrastructure for both on-chain and second-layer payments.

MimbleWimble Extension Blocks were activated on Litecoin in 2022 following the implementation of the associated Litecoin Improvement Proposals. MWEB added optional confidential transactions and a separate extension-block structure to the network.

Litecoin Core development remains active. In September 2026, Litecoin Core v0.21.5.8 became the latest listed release, including improvements to MWEB validation and relay, mining, transaction handling, and resource management.

Tokenomics and Emissions

LTC has a maximum supply of 84,000,000 coins. New Litecoin is issued through Proof of Work mining, with the block subsidy decreasing through predetermined halvings every 840,000 blocks.

The current block subsidy is 6.25 LTC per block following the August 2023 Litecoin halving. The subsidy is scheduled to halve to 3.125 LTC at the next 840,000-block halving, after which subsequent halvings will continue reducing the mining reward until the maximum supply is reached.

With a target block interval of approximately 2.5 minutes, Litecoin produces roughly four times as many blocks as Bitcoin over the same period. The combination of the block interval and halving schedule determines the network's long-term issuance rate.

Mining is the mechanism through which new LTC enters circulation. Miners receive the block subsidy along with transaction fees for contributing Proof of Work and processing transactions.

Litecoin does not use a separate staking token or protocol-level token allocation. Its monetary policy is defined by the blockchain's consensus rules and follows a predictable issuance schedule.

Roadmap

Litecoin development focuses on maintaining the security and reliability of the core blockchain while improving transaction privacy, network performance, wallet functionality, and payment infrastructure.

Current Litecoin Core development includes continued maintenance of the base protocol, MWEB validation and relay, mining functionality, wallet software, networking, transaction processing, and resource management. The project continues to publish open-source releases as protocol improvements and maintenance updates are developed.

MWEB remains an active area of development, with recent Litecoin Core releases adding additional validation, relay protections, state handling, resource controls, and regression testing for MWEB transactions and extension blocks.

The broader Litecoin ecosystem also continues development around payment infrastructure, wallets, merchant services, exchanges, mining, Lightning Network integrations, and other applications built around LTC.

Litecoin development is conducted through open-source repositories and Litecoin Improvement Proposals, allowing protocol changes and technical improvements to be developed and reviewed publicly.
