Introduction

DigiByte (DGB) is a decentralized, open-source Proof of Work blockchain built around a UTXO architecture and designed for fast transactions, network security, digital assets, and decentralized applications. The network launched in January 2014 and has continued operating as a public blockchain.

DigiByte uses five Proof of Work mining algorithms and targets 15-second block times. The ecosystem includes DGB as its native cryptocurrency, DigiAssets for creating digital assets, Digi-ID for decentralized authentication, and DigiDollar, a native non-custodial stablecoin that generates USD-pegged liquidity using DGB collateral.

DigiByte

DigiByte is a public blockchain that began development in 2013 and launched its genesis block in January 2014. The project was developed from Bitcoin's codebase and uses a UTXO transaction model.

The network is built around Proof of Work security, rapid block production, open-source development, and independently operated infrastructure. DigiByte supports native cryptocurrency transactions as well as additional applications and digital assets built on its blockchain.

DGB

DGB is the native cryptocurrency of the DigiByte blockchain. It is used for transactions and network fees and provides the economic asset secured by DigiByte's Proof of Work mining network.

DigiByte has a maximum supply of 21 billion DGB. New DGB is issued through mining rewards according to a predictable emission schedule, with the block reward decreasing by 1% each month.

Proof of Work

DigiByte secures its blockchain using five Proof of Work algorithms: SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit, and Odocrypt. The algorithms operate in parallel and allow different categories of mining hardware to participate in securing the network.

DigiShield provides dynamic mining difficulty adjustment to help maintain consistent block production, while Odocrypt periodically re-randomizes its algorithm characteristics. The multi-algorithm design distributes mining participation across different algorithm classes.

15-Second Blocks

DigiByte targets approximately 15-second block times. The shorter block interval allows transactions, exchange deposits, payments, and asset transfers to receive blockchain confirmations quickly.

The block production system works alongside DigiShield's dynamic difficulty adjustment and DigiByte's five-algorithm mining architecture to maintain the targeted block interval.

UTXO Architecture

DigiByte uses a UTXO-based transaction model derived from Bitcoin. Transactions consume previously created unspent transaction outputs and create new outputs that can be spent in subsequent transactions.

The UTXO architecture provides the foundation for DGB transactions as well as additional DigiByte functionality, including DigiAssets and DigiDollar.

DigiAssets

DigiAssets is a digital asset platform built directly on the DigiByte blockchain. It allows users and developers to issue digital assets using the network's UTXO infrastructure.

DigiAssets can represent fungible tokens, collectibles, certificates, vouchers, and other digital assets. Asset metadata can include IPFS-anchored information, while asset transactions are secured by DigiByte's Proof of Work network.

Digi-ID

Digi-ID is a decentralized authentication system designed to provide passwordless authentication using cryptographic signatures. Users authenticate by signing a unique challenge directly from their device rather than sending passwords to a centralized service.

Digi-ID can be integrated into digital and physical services using open-source libraries for Node.js, PHP, Python, and Go. A WordPress plugin is also available for supported websites.

DigiDollar

DigiDollar is a native, non-custodial stablecoin on the DigiByte mainnet designed to generate USD-pegged liquidity by locking DGB in on-chain reserves. It does not rely on a centralized issuer, custodian, or administrative key.

DigiDollar uses a MuSig2 Schnorr oracle roster to provide the USD price feed and was activated through BIP9 miner signaling on July 17, 2026. DigiDollar functionality is incorporated into DigiByte Core and operates directly on the DigiByte blockchain.

Network Security

DigiByte's network security is provided by five parallel Proof of Work algorithms. SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit, and Odocrypt each contribute mining power and provide different hardware requirements.

DigiShield dynamically adjusts mining difficulty, while the multi-algorithm architecture distributes mining activity across different algorithm classes. DigiByte also uses Dandelion++ for transaction propagation privacy.

Protocol Development

DigiByte has introduced multiple protocol technologies throughout its development, including DigiShield, MultiAlgo mining, SegWit, Odocrypt, and Dandelion++. More recent Core development incorporates technologies from the Bitcoin Core 26 framework, including Schnorr signatures, Pay-to-Taproot, and Tapscript.

DigiByte Core provides the primary node software for validating blocks and transactions, participating in the peer-to-peer network, operating wallets, and accessing developer interfaces.

Supply and Issuance

DigiByte has a maximum supply of 21 billion DGB. The network launched through public mining rather than an ICO or traditional token sale. A 0.5% premine, equal to 105 million DGB, was created at launch, with 50% reserved for development and the remainder distributed through giveaways.

Mining remains the source of new DGB issuance. The block reward follows a predictable emission schedule and decreases by 1% each month until the maximum supply is reached.

Open-Source Development

DigiByte is developed as an open-source project, with its core software and development resources publicly available. The network is supported by independent developers, miners, node operators, and community contributors.

The project provides open-source node software, developer resources, RPC interfaces, integration tools, DigiAssets infrastructure, Digi-ID libraries, and other components for building applications and services on DigiByte.

Applications and Ecosystem

The DigiByte ecosystem supports cryptocurrency payments and transfers, digital asset creation, decentralized authentication, and blockchain-based financial applications.

Developers can integrate DGB and other DigiByte functionality into wallets, exchanges, payment systems, applications, and services using the network's open-source infrastructure and developer interfaces.

DigiByte Core

DigiByte Core is the primary full-node software for the DigiByte blockchain. Running a full node allows users to independently validate blocks and transactions while participating in the peer-to-peer network.

DigiByte Core includes wallet functionality, SegWit and Bech32 support, RPC interfaces, and the protocol functionality required to interact with the current DigiByte network.

Contract

DGB is the native asset of the DigiByte blockchain and is not an ERC-20 or other smart contract token. There is no Ethereum contract address for native DGB.

Mainnet

The DigiByte mainnet has operated since January 2014. Users can run DigiByte Core nodes, send and receive DGB, participate in Proof of Work mining, create and transfer DigiAssets, and use supported DigiByte ecosystem applications.

The network continues to operate as an open-source blockchain with independently operated nodes, miners, developers, and ecosystem participants.
