Introduction

Compute Substrate is a Proof of Work blockchain designed to create a shared, decentralized layer for recording and aggregating information. The network allows participants to publish proposals, express support through attestations, and build transparent data sets that can be used by applications and communities.

Rather than focusing on traditional smart contracts or decentralized finance, Compute Substrate is built around information coordination and collective signals. Its architecture provides an on-chain framework for organizing proposals, attestations, rankings, and other structured information in a persistent and verifiable environment.

CSD

CSD is the native asset of Compute Substrate and is used throughout the network for transactions and participation. Users spend CSD to publish information to the blockchain, including proposals and attestations.

CSD also provides the economic mechanism behind the network's information aggregation system, with attestations carrying economic weight based on the fees used to submit them.

Proof of Work

Compute Substrate uses Proof of Work to secure its blockchain and produce new blocks. Mining allows participants to contribute computational resources to the network and receive CSD through block rewards.

The network supports both CPU and GPU mining, with the open-source node providing the core mining functionality and CUDA support available for compatible NVIDIA hardware.

Proposals

Proposals are one of the core building blocks of Compute Substrate. Participants can publish ideas, claims, possibilities, or other structured information to a specific domain on the blockchain.

Once recorded, proposals become part of the shared network history and can be referenced by other participants. This creates a persistent on-chain record that can be used by applications, communities, researchers, and other information-driven systems.

Attestations

Attestations allow participants to express support for proposals already recorded on the network. Each attestation references a proposal and can include a score and confidence value.

By combining proposals with attestations from multiple participants, Compute Substrate creates a structured environment for collecting and comparing signals across a shared blockchain.

Information Aggregation

A central feature of Compute Substrate is its ability to aggregate information recorded by network participants. Proposals and attestations can be organized into domains and time-based epochs, allowing related information to be evaluated together.

The network produces deterministic aggregate rankings from the information recorded on-chain, giving users and applications a consistent view of the signals represented within each domain.

Decentralized Coordination

Compute Substrate is designed as a coordination layer for applications that need to collect and organize information from multiple participants. The blockchain provides a common record where different proposals and viewpoints can remain visible alongside the signals associated with them.

This approach can be applied to areas such as prediction aggregation, research, model evaluation, decentralized signal collection, rankings, and other systems that benefit from transparent information coordination.

Domains and Epochs

Domains provide separate spaces for organizing proposals and attestations around specific subjects or applications. This allows different communities and applications to maintain their own sets of information within the same network.

Epochs provide a time-based structure for the network, helping organize proposals and attestations into defined periods. Together, domains and epochs provide a framework for creating structured information markets and ranking systems.

Blockchain Architecture

Compute Substrate uses a UTXO-based blockchain architecture and is built in Rust. The network combines Proof of Work, peer-to-peer networking, on-chain data storage, and application-specific transactions designed around proposals and attestations.

The architecture is focused on keeping the blockchain lightweight while providing the core infrastructure required to record information, process network transactions, and generate aggregate results.

Mining

Mining is an important part of the Compute Substrate ecosystem. Participants can run the network software and contribute CPU or GPU computing power to Proof of Work mining.

The project provides mining functionality through its open-source node software, with CUDA acceleration available for NVIDIA GPUs. Mining pools and third-party mining infrastructure can also connect miners to the network.

Applications and Use Cases

Compute Substrate provides infrastructure for applications that need a decentralized way to collect and aggregate structured information. Proposals and attestations can represent different opinions, predictions, research findings, evaluations, or other signals.

Potential applications include prediction systems, research coordination, model and benchmark evaluation, decentralized rankings, information discovery, and other services that benefit from transparent and independently verifiable data.

Open-Source Development

Compute Substrate is developed as an open-source Rust project. Its public repository contains the blockchain node, Proof of Work implementation, networking, transaction processing, wallet functionality, application state, APIs, and testing infrastructure.

The project continues to develop the underlying network, including improvements to node performance, synchronization, mining, transaction processing, blockchain organization, and application functionality.

Mainnet

Compute Substrate operates a live Proof of Work mainnet where participants can run nodes, mine CSD, publish proposals, submit attestations, and explore the resulting blockchain data.

The project provides documentation for running nodes, participating in mining, interacting with the network, and building applications around the Compute Substrate protocol.
