Introduction
BNB Chain is a blockchain ecosystem designed to support decentralized applications, decentralized finance, digital assets, Layer 2 scaling, and decentralized data storage. The ecosystem includes BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and BNB Greenfield, with BNB serving as the native token across the network.
BNB Smart Chain is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that provides smart contract functionality and uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus. opBNB is a Layer 2 scaling network built on BNB Smart Chain, while BNB Greenfield provides decentralized data storage and data management infrastructure.
BNB Token
BNB is the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem. It is used to pay transaction fees, participate in staking and validator delegation on BNB Smart Chain, and support governance across BNB Chain networks.
BNB uses multiple burning mechanisms designed to reduce its total supply over time. The BNB Auto-Burn system is designed to reduce the total supply toward 100 million BNB, with the burn amount determined by network activity and BNB market conditions. BNB Smart Chain also uses real-time gas fee burning, while the Pioneer Burn Program accounts for eligible lost BNB.
Initial Supply: 200,000,000 BNB
Target Supply: 100,000,000 BNB
Token Type: Native Utility Token
Network: BNB Chain
Primary Network: BNB Smart Chain

Token Distribution
BNB was originally issued with a total supply of 200 million tokens. The initial distribution allocated BNB across the public sale, the founding team, and angel investors.
Public Sale: 100,000,000 BNB

Technology
BNB Smart Chain is an Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible blockchain based on a modified version of the go-ethereum codebase. The network uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA), combining staking-based validator selection with a limited validator set responsible for block production.
BNB Smart Chain currently selects 45 active validators through staking-based elections. The active set consists of 21 Cabinet validators and 24 Candidate validators. For each epoch, 18 Cabinet validators and 3 Candidate validators form the 21-validator consensus group responsible for producing blocks.
The network has implemented fast finality and operates with a current target block time of approximately 0.45 seconds. Under normal conditions with sufficient validator participation, finalized blocks can be reached within two blocks.
opBNB extends the BNB Chain ecosystem through a Layer 2 architecture built using the OP Stack. BNB Greenfield provides decentralized storage infrastructure, with BNB used for gas, staking, storage-related fees, and governance.
Staking & Network Security
BNB Smart Chain is secured through Proof of Staked Authority. BNB holders can delegate their BNB to validator candidates, while validators stake BNB and participate in block production and network consensus.
Validator selection is based on staking rankings, with the highest-ranked candidates eligible for the active validator set. Validators are subject to slashing mechanisms for behavior including double signing, malicious fast-finality voting, and prolonged unavailability.
To create a BNB Smart Chain validator, an operator must provide at least 2,000 BNB in self-delegation, plus additional BNB required for the validator creation process and transaction fees. Becoming an active validator is not guaranteed because active selection is determined by staking rankings.
Team & Organization
BNB Chain originated with the launch of Binance Chain in 2019 and later expanded with BNB Smart Chain, which introduced EVM-compatible smart contracts to the ecosystem. The broader BNB Chain ecosystem is developed and maintained through open-source infrastructure, contributors, validators, and ecosystem organizations.
BNB Chain development is coordinated through the BNB Chain ecosystem and its open-source repositories. Binance is historically associated with the creation of the ecosystem, while the current BNB Chain architecture and software are developed through public repositories and community contributions.
Governance
BNB is used as a governance asset across the BNB Chain ecosystem. BNB Smart Chain uses staking-based governance in which staking participants can participate in validator selection and network decisions.
Following the BNB Chain Fusion, BNB Smart Chain also introduced a native governance module through BEP-297. The governance system allows eligible staking credit holders to submit and vote on proposals, delegate voting rights, and execute approved proposals following a timelock period.
BNB Greenfield also uses BNB for governance, with validators participating in proposals concerning network parameters, validators, storage providers, and other aspects of the Greenfield network.
